There’s this very nifty first line of the song “American Pie” by Don McLean: “A long long time ago, I can still remember how the music used to make me smile…” hehe.

I just sifted through my old music collection yesterday. If there was a psychology on the preferences of music of one particular person (a Reader’s Digest article cited that one), my case could be a bit baffling. I have 3 by Linkin Park, 2 each of Rage Against The Machine, Korn, Limp Bizkit, 1 each by Papa Roach, Hoobastank, Slapshock, Incubus, PNE, U2. and other famed rock bands from 1998 to 2003. To think I’m edgy by that, but I also have multitudes of albums by N’Sync (2), Blue (2), Eraserheads (2), Savage Garden (2), Rivermaya (2), A1 (2), Shaggy (1), Robbie Williams (1), Madonna (1), and other pop culturelle icons. Another case would be that I have 2 Coldplay albums and 2 by Lighthouse Family. I started collecting albums from 1998 to 2003, then it kinda came down when the computer games went uphill and my cash went down the virtual drain.

These music things used to make me smile. Now it kinda went from USA to Japan. But I have still a nice penchant to include 2 or more English/OPM songs in my music collection.

I still keep them in a bit pristine-like position.

* a little update: I kinda liked a C-Pop singer named Jolin Tsai (am I right on the spelling and genre?) at the MTVAsia music awards. Probably I’ll sample a song or two from her. *

Sidenote: I tentatively titled this “American Balut”, but WTH. I’ll stick to this.

I recently read some scanlations of the manga “Ai Yori Aoshi”. Turned out to be more on ecchi than “Love Hina”.

I changed my daily schedule for the 2-week vacation before the start of classes. First, I wake up by about 8 or 9 AM. Then, play PC games and read RD issues for about 10 hours. At night, that’s where I bring out my anime collection and watch one series per night. Last night I watched “Kare Kano“, or in English understanding, “His and Her Circumstances”, a very wild and wacky but heart-warming movie about growing relationships.

Thinking about that… mostly my anime collection borders on the cheesy “rabu-rabu” type. But I have Gundam SEED and Trigun and GetBackers and BLEACH too. I rather like animes that make me think about something and are targeted on “mature” audiences.

Hum hum. Before my birthday, I should start this right now.

I thought of doing this while my buddy Masamunedjinn was doing this last year or so. He titled it “Teh Konpesyons” (The Confessions), full of admissions ranging from philosophical to acidly funny to plain goofy things. So, credit Irwin for this. I’ll make my own, about 100, from now until a certain date.

~hehe. Probably I’ll mess this up on a point.

1. I read magazines. National Geographic, Time, NewType, AsiaWeek, Popular Science, Men’s Weekly, etc. Sometimes, when I am REALLY bored, I even read womens’ magazines, only if nobody’s around to make a fool of me. I only learn things there like what women like and don’t like. And that’s why I don’t make many female acquaintances angry with me.

2. I’m dandy with assembling things. I assembled my present computer desk by myself, my own standfan, and some other gadgets. But I drew the line at fixing, which is the thing I’m not good at.

3. I hate Mathematics. Even if I’m in a college course where math is an inevitability, I definitely hate anything that goes beyond what the teacher describes as “easy”. That’s their euphemism for “you will bleed buckets until you learn”.

4. I have never acted in theater things. My high school back then had multitudes of theater that almost caught me, but eluding them was the one thing I liked. I am never good at pretending. *Wistful thinking: Probably I’ll never be an actor*

5. Piano. I really like songs with piano accompaniments, but give me a Mozart or Beethoven CD and I will chuck it out of the window.

6. My best actor of all time will be Sean Connery, the first James Bond actor. He is a very versatile guy for his stature. I especially liked him in “The Rock” and “Finding Forrester”.

7. I am good with eluding things with loopholes. For example, at high school we had this “booster” mass singing thing that we are required to attend, but was pretty mundane and boring. The teachers threatened that they will be checking attendance and deducting scores, which I knew was a big fat lie. So while my classmates were doing that singing and manure repertoires, I and my homies are in a mall somewhere playing PC games. When the big day came, I knew the songs by heart since I kept the xerox handouts and I just sang along with them. I never saw a ngeative in my scorecard. Another case will be the UST CWTS meetings. We were scheduled by 12 PM. Since there was an earlier batch by 8 AM, I just signed the attendance sheet and left the building, with the guards assuming I was one of the 8 AM crew. Hehe. Pretty evil thing, but relished it. ~heehee. But even if I attend them, I’m mentally absent since I always read manga or listen to music at those meetings.

8. I am very meticulous in buying CDs at Quiapo, Manila. Mostly I buy DVDs. But, I patronize Filipino by-products, so by a matter of principle I do not buy pirated Filipino movie DVDs, OPM CDs and other that is related to Filipino media. I only buy foreign movie DVDs, where I apply my meticulousness. I insist on testing the CDs for quality and clarity. Even if it’s a fave movie of mine, if it don’t meet my liking, I don’t buy it at all. Even the cover of the DVD has to be good enough. I hate seeing a movie that is covered in a paper design that looked like it came from Nickelodeon. But on music, I rather buy original, since they’re the ones that are prized collections in the near future.

9. I was first hooked on J-Music when I saw a Utada Hikaru CD at the SM Fairview Dep’t Store record bar. I was intrigued, since then by mid-2003 (i think it is) Utada Hikaru was plastered in commercials at MTV. I bought it (about less than 450) without my mom knowing, and soon enough I was trying other genres. Then came anime, and more so to speak, fuelled the flame.

10. My memory when I was a kid was sharp. Up to now I can remember some of my favorite shows, notably the “$ 1,000,000 Chance of A Lifetime”, and I know the gradual evolution of the DragonBall series then. I know the shows like “Buddy and Sol”, “Mara Clara”, and other of those tearjerkers then. But more so, I was hooked on game shows, Quantum TV advertisments, and of course, anime.

11. I’m not good with singing. I only sing when I want to freak my sisters out or when I’m really bored enough to try crazy things.

12. It’s not unusual for me to be shrieked at home. My sisters and mom’s dressing place is near my room and it’s too public, so to speak. When I come to my room, often I hear shrieks from any of them in there, and they oftenly accuse me of peeking, which is never true.

13. My first mp3 file was an Eraserheads song, “Ligaya” (Joy).

14. I sleep at night… with my headphones on, my mp3 player at volume 18, and in infinite loop until my battery gauge runs out, in which time I’m already in slumberland.

15. I first blogged at 4th year high school. My school paper adviser was the one who gave me encouragement to make one, so first I was on BlogCity. But after 7 months I transferred to BlogDrive, which was recommended to me by CNBgirl.

16. I only had a cellphone when I was in 3rd year high school, but due to my practicalities with cash, I only text and call when necessary. I just was discouraged by my homies that spend hundreds of pesos texting a bunch of pretty cute but useless things.

17. I don’t aspire to be a politician. I’m not yet crazy to put my soul in a pawnshop.

18. I’m a Catholic, but I believe, strongly, in karma. What goes around, comes around. But, I’m impulsive, so I’m a risk taker, and I tend to do things I even know will kick me back in the end. So, karma kicks my ass a lot of times in a year.

19. I like exotic foods, but that doesn’t mean I eat almost anything. I check if it’s good enough.

20. I believe in two systems in social life: the legal system and the etiquette system. The legal system prevents us from doing improper things to each other. The etiquette system prevents us from driving each other crazy.

So, ciao. By next time, another 20. Hehe. Thanks.
